Tips for Arranging Artwork at Galleries

Arranging artwork in an exhibition, or even in your room, can be stressful. Since you want your booth to be the focal point at an art show, you should have a good plan for arranging your work. The key to having a well-organized gallery is keeping your arrangements loose, while space is kept tight. Combining materials, colours, and shapes that go well together can also provide a casual and attractive look.

The way you arrange your artwork can impact the number of people visiting your exhibition. Although all collections are different, and require unique layouts, the look you want to impart should be reflected by the approach you use to arrange your artwork. This post provides ideas on how to create a perfect gallery wall.

The ‘Grid’

If you want order in your art booth, then the ‘grid’ is the right arrangement for you. This formation will give your booth a classic appeal due to its systematic approach. To achieve an orderly grid arrangement, you can display your artwork in identical frames. The mounts should be set in the same direction in such a way that the artwork is organized systematically. You can add some visual pop by using colourful matting, which will also help lure viewers to your booth.

Focal Point Arrangement

Artists presenting their work at a show should focus on making a statement. Therefore, creating focal points can be an excellent idea. The arrangement starts with flanking oversized pieces of art, or even a mirror, with other, smaller pieces of artwork. With an eye-catching focal point at the center, even the smaller pieces of artwork can be easily seen.

The ‘Lean’

You should avoid simply hanging art on the walls. Rather, try to use a ‘lean’ arrangement, which is both casual and enticing. Use long shelves, solo or multiples, to display your artwork. Smaller pieces can be set on the shelves. To achieve a more layered look, you can choose to display artwork in a variety of orientations or sizes. If you have enough space, you can position smaller pieces of art in front of bigger ones.

Throwback Arrangement

If you don’t have much time to arrange your booth, throwback design, which is simple and quick, can be the ideal design arrangement to adopt. With this approach, artwork is hung on walls with rope or wire instead of traditional hangers. The rope will give your booth a rustic feel.

Top-Down Arrangement

In most cases, galleries arrange their artwork out from the center, with the various pieces radiating outward. This arrangement is classic, and imbues the gallery with a sense of mounting tension. Artists can replicate this approach by arranging their work from the top of their booth to the bottom along a straight line.
